I was surprised to hear of this story about a man snorkeling in a river in Oregon and being shot in the head by a gunman who thought the swimmer was a nutria.
I suppose that’s because I’ve shot my share of nutria in backwoods creeks and ponds.
And I wondered, how do you mistake a snorkeler with a nutria?!
A few more details clarified things a little bit. The shooter was a felon, and charged with the possession of a firearm as well as possession of meth and mari-joo-ana.
That explains things a little more!

I can’t decide who’s the bigger idiot. But, hey, I must defend Oregon. That is not Oregon for 99% of us. Maybe 98%.

Why do you shoot them? I’m not animal rightist, just a curious Easterner. Around here people trap beaver and muskrat, but I never heard of shooting them as pests…though I may be wrong since I have not done either. Quite frankly I only had a vague idea of what a nutria was before reading this.
Just wondering,

Oh yeah, they’re a big-time pest.
By the way, check out Kon’s Nutria Documentary if you didn’t see it before.

Yeah, that, and also there’s no bounty on their hides that I know of.
