I’ve been going through some miscellaneous CD-ROMs that I have sitting around, looking for some ancient data that I used to have. I came across some old CD’s from when AHQ recorded Lookin’ Up, different takes and mixes and whatnot from the studio. Our engineer would give us CD’s of stuff we had done so we could further analyze it at home and make some decisions there.
This one CD I just found had some outtake stuff on it (posted here) and a bunch of regular takes on it. Some of which ended up on the album, some of which did not. That of which I wish to speak now.
I found a take of “When Morning Sweeps” that I had completely forgot about, evidently we had an alternate ending for it! Interesting. I think we made the right decision in which to put on the album, but this is still interesting.
Here it is. If you forgot or don’t know what the actual ending ended up to be, buy Lookin’ Up.

You definitely made the right choice. The alternate is… interesting, (I do not say this sarcastically, it is interesting) but the one you used is better.

I’ve been thinking on it a little more about why it doesn’t work very well. It is just way too early and the wrong place to ritard for one thing. And the bass lead sounds a little goofy that high right there. I don’t know, it just doesn’t work.

It might have worked had it been performed a little better. That ain’t slamming, just stating. ;) You guys have proved with “Purpose” that this was back in the good ‘ole days… They’re good for encouraging us with how far we’ve come, and not what we were then.
My cousin emailed me a clip of me leading singing at a service in ’99. He named it “Old Dave”… It was rough; I struggled with my self-esteem for a week after.

Ha ha! I hear you Dave, been there.
You’re right too, it wasn’t the best performance either. Still don’t think it would’ve worked though, it just didn’t make a whole lot of sense musically.
